The Importance of Oiling Your Wooden Cutting Board

A well-maintained kitchen isn't just about aesthetics—it’s about functionality, cleanliness, and longevity. This is especially true when it comes to caring for your wooden cooking accessories, like wooden cutting boards, which need more care than other kitchen tools.

If you own a wood cutting board like I do (I love my scalloped oak cutting board!), regularly oiling the board is a crucial step to ensuring it remains in top condition for years to come. In this post, I’ll explore why oiling your oak cutting board is a crucial maintenance step and how often you should do it.

Why You Should Oil Your Oak Cutting Board

1. Prevents Drying and Cracking

Oak is a durable hardwood, but without proper care, it can dry out and develop cracks over time. This doesn't just destroy your board; it also increases the amount of bacteria hiding on your board because of how it complicates the cleaning process. Oiling your cutting board keeps the wood hydrated, preventing it from splitting and ensuring a smooth surface for chopping and food preparation.

2. Enhances Longevity

Regular oiling works wonders for extending the lifespan of your cutting board. With proper maintenance, a high-quality board can last for years, making it a worthwhile investment in your kitchen.

3. Maintains the Natural Beauty of the Oak

Oiling enhances the natural grain and color of the board's wood, giving it a rich, warm appearance. This not only makes your cutting board more visually appealing but also adds a touch of elegance to your kitchen.

How to Oil Your Oak Cutting Board

1. Clean the Board – Wash it with warm water and mild soap, then dry it thoroughly.

2. Apply Food-Grade Mineral Oil – Pour a small amount onto the board and spread it evenly using a clean cloth or paper towel. (If this is the first time you've oiled your cutting board, it might soak up quite a bit of oil, requiring more than normal to get it saturated.)

3. Let It Soak In – Allow the oil to absorb for several hours or overnight.

4. Wipe Off Excess Oil – Use a dry cloth to remove any remaining oil before using the board again.

5. Repeat Regularly – Depending on use, oil your cutting board every 2-4 weeks or whenever it starts to look dry.

Final Thoughts

Caring for your oak cutting board through regular oiling ensures a more sanitary and long-lasting kitchen tool. My scalloped oak cutting board is my FAVORITE product right now, and it's worth every bit of extra bit of time to properly care for it. If it's been awhile since your own wooden cutting board has been oiled, give it a little extra love today!
