The Art of Layering: A Guide to Layering Decor for a Polished, Curated Look
Share
Decorating is an art. And something I’ve learned over the course of the years is that one of the most effective ways to achieve a sophisticated and inviting space is through layering.
Thoughtfully combining textures, colors, sizes, and patterns can transform a room or entryway into a visually stunning masterpiece. And one of the most charming and versatile decor elements you can incorporate into your home’s layering efforts is the gingham bow. (This timeless pattern exudes warmth and nostalgia while adding a touch of rustic elegance!) Here’s how you can master the art of layering decorations, and pair your efforts with a gingham bow, to create a polished, curated look.
1. Start with a Solid Foundation
Before adding decorative elements, establish a strong base. No matter what you’re trying to decorate– whether it’s an entryway side table, a mantel, a front door display, or an entire room, ensure the primary area is clean and well-prepared. Also keep in mind that you’ll probably want a neutral or solid-colored backdrop; it will allow your layered elements to pop without looking chaotic.

2. Play with Textures and Patterns
To create depth, mix different textures and patterns. Pairing a soft gingham bow with rough burlap runners, delicate lace accents, or smooth ceramic pieces can add dimension and charm while also curating your personal style. The contrast between different materials ensures that each element stands out while maintaining harmony.
3. Stick to a Cohesive Color Palette
A well-layered look is achieved through a consistent color scheme. If you’re using a gingham bow in classic red and white, incorporate complementary hues such as soft creams, rich browns, or even a hint of black for contrast. If you opt for pastel gingham bows (like pink or cream), keep your surrounding decor in the same soft color family for a cohesive aesthetic.
4. Find a Unifying Element
One of the best ways to create a polished look is by repeating design motifs. Use gingham bows as a focal point, or use them as an accent across multiple areas—tie them around vases, incorporate them into wreaths, or use them to accent furniture. This subtle repetition ties the entire space together effortlessly. (Or, if your space would be overwhelmed by the use of multiple bows, try using one as a focal point, and centering the rest of your display around it– more on that below.)
5. Layer Small Accents with Larger Pieces
Balance is key when layering decor. Large pieces such as framed artwork or mirrors should serve as focal points, while smaller items like gingham bows, candles, and potted plants act as accents. The contrast in scale ensures the space looks curated rather than cluttered.
Creating a layered look will take your decor to the next level, making your space look more detailed, curated, and themed. Let me know how you incorporate layered looks into your own home!
