Goodbye Minimalism, Hello Nostalgia: Traditional Trends are Back
Share
Lately, I've noticed something exciting happening in the world of home decor: more traditional trends are making a comeback! As someone who's always had a soft spot for vintage-inspired elements, I’m eager to see some of these classic features make their way back into our homes in fresh and exciting new ways.
Scalloped Details

Let’s talk about one trend in particular that has caught my eye—scallops. I first stumbled into the emerging trend two and a half years ago when I found a light fixture with beautiful scallop detailing. I was instantly drawn to it. From there, I began noticing the pattern in older antiques and vintage furniture. Around the same time, the whole “Joanna Gaines shiplap” trend was exploding, and I think there was a collective desire to revisit more traditional elements in home decor.
Scalloped details have since started appearing in rugs, baskets, and trays, which I LOVE seeing. For a while, decor leaned towards clean, minimal lines and streamlined designs, but personally, I’m drawn to things that have more personality. Scalloping feels feminine, playful, and fun, and provides a beautiful contrast to the heavier, more masculine elements in the wood where it's often used.
If you’re looking to incorporate the playful charm of scallops into your own space, be sure to check out our scalloped product line. (For example, check out our scalloped oak cutting board or our scalloped wicker baskets to get you started!) We started selling many of our products specifically because I wanted small, subtle ways to incorporate the trend, but couldn't find them
Gingham
Another classic trend I adore is gingham. It's versatile, timeless, and works in a wide variety of different decor settings. I've used it in everything from my dish towels to my decor to my duvet covers. It’s easy to incorporate, it feels like home, and it blends seamlessly with almost anything.
One of my favorite ways to incorporate gingham into my home is through gingham bows! Bows as a decor piece have also been making a come-back recently, and with a wide variety of options to choose from, it's never been easier to create a personalized look. Right now, I'm in love with our new Easter blue gingham bow, but some of my other favorites include using a classic red bow for seasonal displays (think the 4th of July or Christmas) or using a black or cream gingham bow for a more neutral, year-long look.
Oak
Another timeless trend that has experienced a huge resurgence recently is oak. Oak started making its way back into interior design around the same time as the scallop trend, and it’s been steadily gaining popularity ever since. This is particularly true as people have started moving away from darker floors and cabinets and incorporating lighter-toned materials throughout their homes.
Because of its natural, light tones, oak plays into this changing trend perfectly. I've seen this trend firsthand! My husband and I build a home every two or three years, and I've seen how the wood color trends have changed. Several homes ago, dark wood floors were all the rage, and I incorporated it into our build. However, in recent years as I've styled our new homes, I’ve found that the trends have been leaning towards lighter and lighter woods.
If you want a subtle way to incorporate this trend, I'd encourage taking a look at our oak product line, which includes our scalloped oak cutting board, oak trivets, and oak cookbook stand. (I especially love our oak cutting board because of the way it blends the masculine and feminine in a beautiful, yet functional, piece that I can leave out on my counter.)
Incorporating Trends... the Right Way
If you love these trends as much as I do, then you're probably already thinking of ways to incorporate them into your own home! Over my years in home decor, I've learned that one of the easiest and most sustainable ways to incorporate trends and keep my home looking fresh-- without breaking the bank or committing to one decor style too quickly-- is to focus on incorporating the trend through small, easily interchangeable items. Think throw pillows, small accent pieces, table center pieces, etc. Little touches like these let me experiment without overhauling my entire house or overly committing to one trend.
If you're ready to start experimenting, be sure to check out our gingham bow collection, take a look at our oak products like our oak cutting board or oak trivets, or view our scalloped collection with items like scalloped placemats and scalloped wicker baskets. Then let us know: what's your favorite way you've seen these trends incorporated?
